Serving Meals. Building Community.
For more than 40 years, the Community Soup Bowl has served as a consistent and compassionate response to hunger in Tuscaloosa. What began in 1983 as a simple effort to share a pot of soup has grown into a vital community resource serving thousands of meals each year.
The Community Soup Bowl exists to reduce food insecurity by providing nourishing meals, compassionate hospitality, and connection to essential resources for our neighbors in need. More than a meal, the Soup Bowl is a place where people are welcomed, valued, and supported.
Today, the Soup Bowl serves hot lunches every weekday and most weekends, ensuring reliable access to food for individuals and families across the community. In 2025 alone, more than 110,000 meals were served, each one made possible through the generosity of donors, partners, and volunteers.
The organization is sustained by a strong network of support, including five founding churches, local restaurants, civic groups, and individuals. Approximately 65 percent of funding comes from individual donations, making every gift a meaningful part of continuing this work.
At the center of it all are the volunteers and staff who make daily operations possible, creating not only meals but moments of dignity, connection, and care.
The Community Soup Bowl is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization committed to fighting hunger and strengthening community, one meal at a time.
